Phil Bev Road Trip 2024:
Adventures Across America
Tuesday, July 23, 2024
As I set out on this trip across America, I take Bev with me rather than finding her memory at the end of my journey. I’m not sure exactly why I’m planning such a long trip or what my purpose is, beyond my core purpose of releasing Bev’s ashes across country, in the places she lived and played or we lived and played together, and other places that we enjoyed together and held meaning. But I am also hoping to find some direction in the journey itself, which is partly like a pilgrimage and partly a search for meaning. And partly because I have no idea what else to do. In something she wrote to me, Bev reminded me of a favorite, and important, quote from the Tao.
Going on means going far, going far means returning
And there’s this similar quote from T. S. Elliot, also a favorite quote.
We shall not cease from exploration. And the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started. And know the place for the first time.

I’m heading out tomorrow, to Montclair, and that’s the start. I do reserve the right to come back home early anytime for any reason, like my back hurts, I’m fed up of all the driving, I need to recharge my Green Lantern ring, all the driving is boring, I left the kettle on… but I hope I won’t return early and will find the trip reflective and energizing. You’ll be the first to know.
I’ll post some photographs with each blog entry, but I’ll post all photos in a Dropbox folder if you’d like to see them all. That Dropbox site is:
